Call For Student Scholarship & Travel Grant Applications

SOSP 2025, through generous donations from conference sponsors, will offer grants to assist participants attending the conference. Each grant reimburses the SOSP conference registration and may reimburse ground/air travel to/from the conference and lodging expenses during the conference. Due to the high variability in travel costs, awardees are asked for their due diligence in finding reasonably priced fares. Applicants must submit an estimate of these travel costs with the grant application.

Grant recipients are expected to assist the conference organizers in some way. For example, recipients may be asked to scribe a technical session or help with a town hall at the conference. These services are greatly appreciated, and provide additional networking opportunities with other conference participants. Actual duties will be assigned as the conference nears.

These funds are limited and will be based on a combination of need and merit. Grant recipient contact information will be made available to the organizations sponsoring the grants.

Who Should Apply?

Funding is available to students (graduate and undergraduate) from any educational institution in the world, as well as to anyone with demonstrated financial need who wishes to attend SOSP 2025, regardless of student status. We especially encourage all groups underrepresented at SOSP to apply.

Applicants must be members of the ACM. See the ACM website for a student membership application. Note that ACM provides significantly reduced rates for students.

How to Apply?

To apply you should submit the following:

    • An SOSP travel grant application and supporting materials. The applicant should visit the scholarship application form and submit the following information:
      • A complete SOSP grant application. The application form must be submitted online at the linked Google Form.
      • A short position statement. This position statement should explain the expected benefit of attending the conference. The statement may describe any relevant research, professional activities, or publications, as appropriate. This statement should be no longer than 600 words.
      • Applicant's CV or résumé.
    • (Only for students) A letter of recommendation from the student's advisor. This letter must describe the technical appropriateness of the student's participation, and any partial support from other sources (e.g., the student's institution) available to cover the costs of the student's attendance at SOSP. Advisors writing letters for multiple students should include an explicit comparison of how each student would benefit from a scholarship. The advisor should submit the plaintext letter separately, by submitting this online form.

FAQ

  1. Should I register for the conference by its early registration deadline?
    • If you will be attending the conference regardless of receiving a grant, please register before the early registration deadline. We will reimburse this registration cost if you receive the grant. On the other hand, if you need the grant to attend and will otherwise not attend, we recommend registering only after your travel grant has been confirmed
  2. Do I need to retain all original receipts, including registration invoices, airfare receipts, and hotel/housing bills?
    • Yes.
  3. Am I eligible to apply for the travel grant if I am not currently a student?
    • Yes. Funding is available to students as well as anyone with demonstrated financial need who wishes to attend SOSP 2025, regardless of student status. Non-student applicants, such as recent graduates or researchers in temporary positions, are eligible to apply.
  4. If I am not currently a student, how should I fill out the affiliation and degree fields in the application form?
    • If you are not a student, please list your current workplace as your affiliation and provide your most recent academic degree. If the form requires details such as institute name or degree that do not perfectly match your current position, you may include a brief clarification in the application to explain your situation.
  5. For the travel grant application, do non-student applicants also need to submit a recommendation letter from their advisor?
    • No. A recommendation letter is required only for student applicants.
